Lately people have been much concerned with Li Xuejun, a mother who was going to save her son with the umbilical cord blood of her newborn. Last Wednesday, she gave a birth to a baby girl and her son received a UCB operation. With permission of the hospital, our reporters went into the operation room and brought us the following report.
At 7:30 AM, we came to the Asepsis ward of the Yinzhou People’s Hospital and found Li Xuejun. She was talking to her son, encouraging him to be brave. At about 9:00 o’clock, when the disinfection work is finished, Li Xuejun is sent to the operation room.
As this is the first case of using UCB of a newborn to save its sibling in the city, the Yizhou People’s Hospital has made good preparations. At 9:30 the caesarean operation is done and a girl infant is born. The UCB collection is done at the same time. All seems going very well.
Pei Renzhi, deputy dean of the Yizhou People’s Hospital says: It goes very well. It is worth congratulating. We have collected two pouches of UCB, totaling 176 ml. This amount is more than expected.
But Mr. Pei says the blood has to undergo a series of tests before being transfused into the body of An’an, the son of Li Xuejun. At noon, the results come out. The blood type is the O type, the same with that of An’an. Other indexes of the blood also meet requirements. At 1:00 Pm, the UCB transfusion is done at the Asepsis ward. Through the glass, we find the blood gradually flows into the body of An’an.
Pei According to Pei Renzhi, whether the UCB transplant operation is successful depends on the future growth, which needs about four weeks’ time. An important index is that the base number of the white cells has to be up to 1000, and another index is that the number of the neutron-cells has to be over 500. In one month, Anan has to receive a chromosome examination. If the chromosome results come out as female chromosome, it will indicate that the blood cells are generated by the hemopoietic tissues of his baby sister.
Before concluding the interview, we go into the ward of Li Xuejun again. Seeing her newborn baby girl, she says she is an angle, having saved not only her brother, but the whole family.
“I want to say Thank You to all showing care for us. Without their help, I could not have felt so happy today. This is the happiest day I have ever had in four years”, says Li Xuejun.
Since mid-April, the story of the mother and her son who was suffering from leukemia has moved the city. In about half a month, people of all walks of life donated 380,000 yuan to them and the hospital exempted the operation expenses of 100,000 yuan,
